South Windsor Has a Bulky Week, but No Transfer Station

One bulky week a month

South Windsor's bulky program is simple: no appointment needed. Bulky waste is collected during the first full week of each month on your normal trash day, with items at the curb by 7 a.m. Condominiums in the listed complexes are picked up only on the Friday of that week. Accepted items include sofas, sleeper sofas and overstuffed chairs, mattresses and box springs, large plastic items, a few car tires without rims, and rugs rolled and tied to a set size.

That is convenient if your timing lines up. If you are closing on a house on the 10th, finishing a basement mid-month, or the tenant moved out on the 3rd and bulky week just ended, the next pickup is weeks away and the pile sits in the driveway in the meantime.

What stays behind

The exclusions are long. Remodeling waste is not collected: doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, tubs, vanities and tile. Construction materials are out too, including lumber, sheetrock, shingles, sheds, fencing, dirt and rocks. TVs, computers and printers are not taken, and neither are pianos, cardboard boxes or bagged and loose trash.

No landfill, no transfer station

Here is the part many new residents do not expect. South Windsor's own FAQ says the town does not have a landfill or transfer station. It points residents to Manchester's pay-as-you-dump cash option instead, which means loading your own vehicle, driving to another town and paying at the scale. Household hazardous waste goes to regional CREOC collection days. For anything the curb rejects, there is no quick local drop-off. That gap is the main reason South Windsor homeowners call a hauler: the piano, the old TV and the pile of cabinet boxes have nowhere nearby to go.

From tobacco fields to subdivisions

South Windsor grew fast. Its population was about 4,000 in 1950 and more than 24,000 by 2000, as tobacco farms and fields became neighborhoods; by 2020 it had nearly 27,000 people. Much of today's housing is the product of that growth, and plenty of those homes are now old enough for a first major kitchen or bath remodel. Near the river, the East Windsor Hill Historic District and the houses along Old Main Street by the Wood Memorial Library are far older, with the steep stairs and small rooms that come with them.

What a crew can take

Remodel debris from DIY kitchens and bathrooms. Old electronics. Playsets, dismantled on site. Pianos and hot tubs, once the crew confirms it can handle them. Basement and garage purges, boxed or bagged. Furniture whenever you need it gone, not just the first week of the month. You get a price based on the truck space your items fill, and the crew does the lifting.

Junk Removal in South Windsor: Questions

When is bulky pickup in South Windsor?

The first full week of each month, on your regular collection day, with items at the curb by 7 a.m. Condos in the listed complexes are collected on Friday of that week. Check the town's site for the current calendar.

Does South Windsor have a dump or transfer station?

No. The town says it does not have a landfill or transfer station, and it refers residents to Manchester's pay-as-you-dump option.

Will the town take my old piano?

No. Pianos are on South Windsor's not-accepted list for bulky pickup. Many junk removal crews can move one; tell us the type and which floor it is on so the crew can confirm.

Can leftover building materials go?

Yes, in reasonable amounts: lumber, sheetrock, cabinets, tile and similar debris from a home project. Larger construction jobs may need a dumpster, and we will tell you if that is the better fit.
