Rocky Hill's Bulk Program Rules Out the Biggest Jobs
Homeowners only, and no cleanouts
Rocky Hill offers curbside bulk pickup, but read the rules closely. It is for homeowners: the town does not provide bulk pickups for commercial properties or apartment complexes. And in capital letters, the town's page says the service does not include tenant move-outs, house cleanouts or house move-outs. In other words, the three situations that create the most junk are the three the program is not built for.
Even for an eligible homeowner, the item list is narrow. Mattresses and box springs must each be sealed in clear mattress disposal bags. Demolition and remodeling materials are refused, along with toilets, sinks, wooden pallets, mirrors, glass, cardboard and pet items. Public Works also reserves the right to limit the number of curbside pickups at a single residence, and pickup days follow your street's zone.
Old Forge Road: residents only, no contractors
The Transfer Station at 59 Old Forge Road takes furniture, mattresses, electronics, scrap metal, tires and tag sale leftovers from residents who show a license, registration or recent utility bill. The town is blunt that it is for residents only, with no contractors. It is open only a couple of weekdays plus Saturday mornings for most of the year and Saturday alone in winter. Late-week trips may be limited to one load, and trailers are not allowed on Saturdays. Sheetrock, ceramic tile, roofing, concrete, stone and dirt are refused.
Rocky Hill's housing is different
Rocky Hill's housing is newer than Hartford's or West Hartford's. Its median home was built in 1979, per the Census, and only 6% of homes predate 1940. Fewer than half of its homes are single-family detached. About 13% are attached townhouses and condos, and nearly 18% are in buildings of 20 or more units, with roughly a third of households renting. That adds up to a lot of moving: apartment leases ending, condo owners downsizing and families combining households.
Rocky Hill jobs a crew can handle
Apartment and condo move-outs, with the crew working around elevators, loading areas and your building's move-out window. Whole-house cleanouts before a sale. Tenant leftovers for landlords who own single units or small buildings. Remodeling debris the curb will not touch, from old vanities and toilets to mirrors and glass shower doors. Furniture that will not fit the new place gets carried down, loaded and taken away, and you never have to find bags big enough for a king mattress.
Whether you are near Dinosaur State Park, down by the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury ferry landing, or in one of the complexes off the main roads, the process is the same: describe the job or send photos, get a price based on truck space, pick a time.

Junk Removal in Rocky Hill: Questions
Does Rocky Hill's bulk pickup cover a tenant move-out?
No. The town says the program does not include tenant move-outs, house cleanouts or house move-outs, and it is not offered to apartment complexes or commercial properties. A private hauler is the usual route for those jobs.
Can a hired crew use the Rocky Hill transfer station?
No. The Old Forge Road station is for residents only and specifically excludes contractors. A junk removal crew takes loads to facilities that accept commercial haulers.
Can you work with my condo or apartment move-out rules?
Yes. Share your building's elevator reservation and loading rules when you book and the crew will schedule inside them.
Do I need to bag my mattress?
Not for a crew pickup. The town requires clear mattress bags for curbside pickup, but the crew carries mattresses out as they are.
