When East Hartford's Curbside Pickup Isn't Enough
Free curbside pickups have a ceiling
East Hartford dropped its bulky waste permit, and residents now book curbside pickups directly with All American Waste. Single and two-family properties get a set number of free pickups per unit each fiscal year, three- to six-family buildings get a few more, and extra pickups are paid by card. For a household replacing one couch, that is a good deal. For a landlord turning over a unit, or a family clearing a parent's house in Burnside or Hockanum, the free allowance can be used up in a single weekend.
What the curb won't take
The bigger problem is the list of exclusions. East Hartford's curbside program does not take TVs, computers, printers or monitors. It does not take car parts, tires or batteries, and it refuses building demolition debris like lumber, plaster, masonry and concrete. Anything in bags or cardboard boxes is left behind, which rules out most of what a departing tenant actually leaves: a closet of bagged clothes and a stack of half-packed boxes. Refrigerators and freezers have to have their doors removed, and mowers and snow blowers need fluids drained first.
The Ecology Drive transfer station
The town's transfer station at 1 Ecology Drive takes appliances, furniture, rugs, electronics, mattresses and more, but it keeps a limited schedule: three weekdays with a midday break, plus two Saturdays a month. Construction and demolition debris needs a copy of a building permit, and the station refuses concrete, masonry, soil, stumps and propane tanks altogether. Check the town's current fee schedule before you load a car.
A town of rentals and postwar homes
Census estimates show about 40% of East Hartford's occupied homes are rented, and roughly 15% of all units sit in buildings with 20 or more apartments. The median home dates to 1961, and about a third of the housing went up between 1940 and 1959. Many of those postwar houses have small attics, full basements and one-car garages that fill up over decades. The apartment complexes produce a steady stream of move-outs.
Landlord and property manager turnovers
For rental owners, every empty day costs money. Ask whether the crew can meet your property manager or work from a lockbox code you provide. They clear everything the last tenant left, bagged and boxed items included, so the unit is ready for the cleaners. If you want photos of the empty rooms for your records, ask for them when you book.
Homeowners from Mayberry Village to Rentschler Field
Not every job is a rental. Crews pull water-damaged carpet out of basements, take apart old swing sets, haul the debris from a DIY bathroom gut, and carry out the treadmill nobody has used in years. You get a price based on truck space before the crew lifts anything.
Or request an estimate online and we'll pass it to a local crew.

Junk Removal in East Hartford: Questions
Will East Hartford's curbside pickup take a TV?
No. The town's curbside bulky program lists electronics, including TVs, computers, printers and monitors, as not accepted. Connecticut also bans covered electronics from regular trash. A junk removal crew can take them to electronics recycling.
Can you clear a unit if the tenant left everything in bags?
Yes. Bagged and boxed items are excluded from town curbside pickup, but they are routine for a hauler. Everything goes in one visit.
Can I drop renovation debris at the East Hartford transfer station?
Only with a copy of a building permit, and concrete, masonry, soil and stumps are not accepted at all. If your project produced those materials, ask us when you book.
Do I need to be home for the pickup?
Not necessarily. Ask when you book whether the crew can work from a lockbox or meet your property manager.
