Bristol's Bulk Pickup, and Where It Falls Short

Bristol has one of the more generous bulky programs in the area. Each residential building gets its first pickup of the calendar year free, and extra collections can be booked for a fee. If you own a single-family home, have a moderate pile and aren't in a hurry, use it.

The catch is in the details on the city's page.

Who the city program doesn't serve well

  • Tenants. Only owners, landlords or property managers can book the free pickup. Renters have to pay for the appointment themselves.
  • Condo owners and bigger buildings. The city doesn't collect bulk from most condos or from buildings with more than five units.
  • Anyone on a deadline. Appointments are typically scheduled two to four weeks out, and setting material out more than 24 hours early can draw a citation.
  • Large or messy jobs. Piles are capped at five cubic yards, roughly three feet by three feet by fifteen. Toilets, sinks, sheetrock, shingles, ceramic tile, mirrors, glass and yard debris aren't eligible.

So the bathroom you just gutted, the condo you're closing on next week, or the apartment you're vacating this month all fall outside the easy lane.

The Lake Avenue transfer station

The City of Bristol Transfer Station on Lake Avenue runs a pay-as-you-throw system. You'll need a resident permit, which means ID with a Bristol address and a recent utility bill, plus prepaid funds on the account. Mattresses, tires, electronics and metal are free within yearly limits, and other loads are charged by weight after a small daily free allowance. It's open weekdays and Saturday mornings. For a resident with a truck, it's practical. For everyone else, it's a borrowed vehicle and a few trips. See the city's current fee schedule before deciding.

Bristol homes and neighborhoods

Bristol built its name on 19th-century clock making and today is mostly residential, spread across Cedar Lake, Chippens Hill, Edgewood, Forestville and the city center. Older homes near downtown and in Forestville, a village dating to the 1830s, often have the deep basements and detached garages that fill up over a generation. Neighborhoods on Chippens Hill and around Cedar Lake bring more yard sheds, swing sets and garage overflow.

How pricing usually works

Junk removal is usually quoted by the portion of the truck your load fills, and you should have the number before anything is carried. A whole basement is quoted the same way as a single chair, just bigger. If you only have one or two items, ask about any minimum charge.

The crew lifts from wherever items sit, including basements, attics and back sheds, then loads and sweeps the cleared spot. Furniture in usable shape can be set aside for donation where possible, and metal goes to recycling.

Why Bristol Chooses Junk Removal Hartford CT

Tenants and condos welcome

Renters, condo owners and larger buildings the city program skips can book directly.

No pile-size cap

Loads bigger than five cubic yards, and the toilets, tile and sheetrock the city won't take, go in one visit.

No citation risk

Nothing sits at the curb for days; items go straight from the house to the truck.

Priced by the load

Quotes usually follow truck space. For a single item, ask about any minimum when you call.

Junk Removal in Bristol: Questions

What's the cheapest way to get rid of one couch in Bristol?

If you own the building and haven't used this year's free city pickup, that's usually cheapest, as long as you can wait a few weeks. If you rent, live in a condo, or need it gone sooner, a private crew can usually take a single item sooner; ask about price and any minimum when you call.

Is it priced by the item?

Most junk removal is priced by volume, meaning the share of the truck you fill. Heavy materials like tile or concrete may be priced differently, so mention them when asking for a quote.

I'm a tenant. Can I book a pickup myself?

Yes. You don't need to be the property owner to request a pickup through this site. If your landlord is arranging the cleanout, either of you can schedule it.
