What Manchester's Bulky Pickup Covers, and Where It Stops

Two free curbside pickups, with a deadline

Manchester gives each dwelling unit on town curbside collection two free bulky pickups per fiscal year. You call Public Works by 2 p.m. on the business day before your regular trash day, and extra collections are paid in advance to All American Waste. Toilets and sinks carry their own per-item charge. The curb takes a reasonable list: furniture, mattresses and box springs, appliances, and covered electronics like TVs and computers. Carpet has to be rolled and tied in bundles no longer than four feet and no heavier than 40 pounds.

The exclusions are where people get stuck. Remodeling debris is out: doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, bathtubs, lumber, shingles, sheetrock, sheds, fencing and pallets. So are dirt and rocks, paint, and anything bagged or boxed. If you just pulled out a kitchen or finished a bathroom, almost none of the leftovers qualify.

The Olcott Street transfer station

Manchester's Transfer Station at 311 Olcott Street is open Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. You need a Recycling Permit Card, which is free each year but strictly for Manchester residents, issued in person with a photo ID plus one other proof of residency, and water bills do not count. Bulky household trash and furniture are paid with punch cards. Punch card prices and the pay-by-weight cash option are on the town's current fee schedule.

Mill-town housing

Manchester's history shows in its buildings. The Cheney Brothers Historic District in South Manchester covers 175 acres and more than 275 buildings: silk mills, worker houses, churches and the Cheney mansions. Most worker houses are one- or two-story frame buildings from the 1800s, and several former mills are now apartments. With nearly 60,000 residents as of 2020, Manchester is a big, busy town, and in 2000 about three in ten of its households were people living alone.

Old frame houses have narrow stairs and small rooms. Converted mill apartments have long hallways and shared elevators. Both make moving furniture slow if you are doing it yourself.

Homes, apartments and storefronts

Jobs come from all over town. Apartment move-outs in converted mills and complexes. Two-family cleanouts for landlords between tenants. Kitchen and bath remodel debris the curb will not take. Garage and attic cleanouts in older neighborhoods. Retail and office spaces around The Shoppes at Buckland Hills and along the commercial corridors, cleared when a lease ends or a store resets. Bagged and boxed items are fine, and so is the carpet you never got around to cutting into four-foot bundles. If a job is large, the crew can split it across two visits so a move-out or a store reset stays on schedule.

You describe the job or send photos, the crew gives you a price from the truck space it needs, and the crew does all the carrying.

Junk Removal in Manchester: Questions

Will Manchester's bulky pickup take my old kitchen cabinets?

No. The town lists remodeling debris, including cabinets, countertops, doors, windows and bathtubs, as not accepted at the curb. A hauler can take them.

Can a non-resident use the Manchester transfer station?

The Recycling Permit Card is for Manchester residents only, and you need a photo ID plus another proof of residency. Water bills are not accepted.

Can a store or office be cleared out?

Yes. Fixtures, shelving, desks and leftover stock can be cleared, and you can schedule around business hours if needed.

Can furniture come out of an older two-family?

Yes. Narrow stairs and tight turns are routine. Large pieces are wrapped, carried carefully and taken apart if they have to be.
